EDUCATION POLICY ADVOCACY DIRECTOR 

Summary:

The Alliance for a Better Community (ABC) seeks an Education Policy Advocacy Director with a deep commitment to educational justice. The ideal candidate will have substantive experience in education policy with a proven track record in successfully developing and leading policy advocacy initiatives. This is a senior level position that will direct and oversee key education policy initiatives and reports directly to the Associate Director. 

The Alliance for a Better Community is a policy advocacy organization focused on promoting equity for Latinos in education, health and civic engagement for the betterment of the Los Angeles region. 

Major responsibilities: 

1.        Develop strategies and execute activities to advance ABC’s state and local policy initiatives in secondary education (e.g. Linked Learning, college and career readiness , school transformation, school finance reform; etc.,) 

2.        Monitor and analyze education policies that impact ABC’s areas of focus (e.g. Common Core, English language learners, educator effectiveness, etc.), 

3.        Advise organizational leadership on policy trends, critical issue areas and recommended actions; 

4.        Work collaboratively with state and local legislators, their staff, and community partners to fulfill ABC’s legislative agenda; 

5.        Navigate the political landscape to strategically advance policy goals; 

6.        Maintain and strengthen working relationship with policy makers, civic leaders, and education advocates to develop, and implement ABC’s education policy agenda; 

7.        Convene, communicate and coordinate with key partners and stakeholders regarding pertinent education policy information to develop collective actions; 

8.        Build political will and public awareness utilizing communication strategies to advance key policies; 

9.        Work with ABC’s Secondary Education team to set and meet the organization’s policy advocacy priorities; 

10.        Serve as ABC’s primary education policy representative among external partners. 

Additional responsibilities may include: 

1.        Engage community members and parents in education policy issues through trainings, public speaking appearances and presentations as needed. 

2.        Support ABC fundraising and other administrative efforts. 

3.        Develop and execute media strategies to elevate the organization’s profile and secondary education priority areas. 

4.        Manage grant goals, reporting and budgets. 

5.        Management of other education program staff. 

Key Qualifications and Expectations: 

1.        Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree, in public policy, education or related field, Master’s Degree preferred. 

2.        Experience: Must have a minimum of 3 years full-time experience in education policy with Masters Degree or 5 years of full-time work experience in education policy with a Bachelor’s Degree. 

3.        Content Knowledge: Must have a proven ability to analyze state and local policy. Substantial knowledge of Los Angeles and California public policy issues, research, and practice on issues such as school transformation, Common Core, Linked Learning, English language learners, and college readiness. 

4.        Community Knowledge: Priority will be given to applicants with experience working within the Los Angeles region, city, school districts, public officials and agencies and key community partners. Preference for candidates with a deep understanding and experience working with the Latino community. 

5.        Leadership Skills: Strong leadership skills with a proven track record in leading broad-based efforts with diverse stakeholders and partners. Must have an ability to step into the position and quickly develop strategies to meet goals and objectives. Contributes positively to the work culture by being solutions-oriented and a team player. 

6.        Collaboration: Able to work independently, within a team environment and lead collaborative efforts to accomplish collective goals and objectives. Maintain positive working relationships with organizational leadership and staff to meet collective goals. 

7.        Organizational Skills: Excellent project management and multi-tasking skills (i.e. strong attention to detail, creating and monitoring project budgets and time lines, proper documentation of work and record keeping, and prioritizing work effectively). 

8.        Communications Skills: Superior interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills. Proven ability to establish and maintain high priority relationships. Preference for bilingual candidates (Spanish & English). 

Salary: $61,000 - $71,000 based on experience and qualifications. Full benefits package offered.

EDUCATION POLICY COORDINATOR 

Summary: 

The Alliance for a Better Community (ABC) seeks an Education Policy Coordinator with a deep commitment to educational justice. The ideal candidate will have strong core skills (i.e. communications, writing, analytical) with the ability to think strategically about policy solutions to education issues that positively impact the Latino community. The Education Policy Coordinator will support and execute education policy advocacy initiatives and report to the Associate Director. 

The Alliance for a Better Community is a policy advocacy organization focused on promoting equity for Latinos in education, health and civic engagement for the betterment of the Los Angeles region. 

Major responsibilities: 

1.        Manage the implementation of ABC’s key education policy initiatives and community campaigns (e.g. Common Core, College and Career Readiness, English Language Learners, School Transformation, etc.); 

2.        Support the development of recommendations regarding strategies and actions that lead to progress of strategic goals and ensure coordination between ABC’s community mobilizing and engagement efforts; 

3.        Coordinate and convene key stakeholders to inform, mobilize and engage in action toward ABC’s education policy priorities; 

4.        Monitor and analyze public education policies that impact ABC’s areas of focus; 

5.        Provide needed research and data collection to inform policy development, grant development and strategy to support program policy development; 

6.        Establish and strengthen working relationship with policy makers, civic leaders, and education advocates to develop, and implement ABC’s education policy agenda; 

7.        Communicate pertinent education policy information to ABC’s education team, key partners, community and stakeholders; 

8.        Support ABC fundraising efforts through ongoing relationship building with existing funders and networking with potential funders; 

9.        Monitor, report and document progress on all projects to provide timely updates to supervisors and complete grant reporting and financial management. 

Key Qualifications and Expectations: 

1.        Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in public policy, education or related field, Master’s Degree preferred. 

2.        Experience: Minimum of 2 years full-time experience in public policy or related field. 

3.        Content Knowledge: Strong familiarity of public policy issues, research, and practice on issues such as school transformation, common core, linked learning, English language learners, and college readiness. Preference for understanding of Los Angeles landscape. 

4.        Community Knowledge: Priority will be given to applicants with experience working within the Los Angeles region, city, school districts, public officials and state organizations and agencies. Preference for candidates with a deep understanding and experience working with the Latino community. 

5.        Leadership Skills: Experience in leading broad-based, multicultural coalitions. Ability to execute projects independently. Contributes positively to the work culture by being solutions-oriented and a team player. 

6.        Collaboration: Able to work independently, within a team environment and lead external collaborative efforts to accomplish goals and objectives. Maintain positive working relationships with organizational leadership and staff to meet collective goals.
