Instructor and Curriculum Developer

The Worker Education and Resource Center Inc. is a non-profit organization located on the fifth floor of the Service Employees International Union Local 721’s office building just west of downtown Los Angeles works in partnership with the Los Angeles County health-related departments and community health clinics. 

The Worker Education and Resource Center provides educational and training opportunities for workers in the healthcare safety net sector.  As Los Angeles County prepares to serve the thousands of newly medically insured residents under Obamacare, workers need skills to improve health services, innovate new care delivery models, and enhance culturally competent care.

WERC has a staff of 20, and is committed to providing dynamic, innovative education and training opportunities in a pro-worker, learner-centered, supportive environment.  It is a high performance program that produces dramatic results – pioneering a large-scale health care workforce development program, including preparing Community Health Workers, improving the patient experience, and training workers for opportunities for employment in the healthcare safety net sector.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:  This is a full-time position reporting to the Director.  Instructors work closely as a team to conduct and develop learner-centered, action-oriented, participatory courses for healthcare workers.  For this position applicants should have a background in healthcare quality improvement as a clinician or educator.  The position requires the ability to develop and adapt curricula, use innovative teaching methods, and provide support and feedback to instructors and students.  Candidates who are bi-lingual in Spanish language and can teach and create curriculum in Spanish are preferred.

Sample duties will include:

·      Meeting with clinical teams and leadership to design the educational programs that are strategic to the desired change in delivery models. 

·      Developing and teaching worker-centered curricula, customized for the particular workplace. 

·      Support students with ongoing education to strengthen their health coaching, customer service, team participation skills, etc.

Qualified individuals will have at least two years of experience in teaching or facilitating healthcare educational programs; be knowledgeable of practices and techniques used in adult and worker education; be able to work using a team approach in a joint labor/management setting; ability to travel to sites within Los Angeles County, and work within flexible hours which may at times include weekends and evenings.

About the Organization

United Friends of the Children empowers current and former foster youth on their journey to self-sufficiency through service-enriched education and housing programs, advocacy, and consistent relationships with a community of people who care. By building relationships with youth over an extended period, UFC’s programs focus on commitment and consistency.  UFC has two programmatic departments: Transitional Housing and Education.  Our Pathways Housing Program provides students with housing and support services as they seek to obtain permanent housing and employment.  Our Education Programs consist of the College Readiness Program and the College Sponsorship Program. 

About the Education Programs

The College Readiness Program (CRP) helps 7^th-12^th grade foster youth throughout Los Angeles County become competitive applicants to four-year colleges/universities.  This service-enriched program offers: individual college counseling, tutoring, workshops, college tours, special events, and summer programs.  CRP’s goal is to instill our foster youth scholars with the belief that they are college bound and then provide the necessary support to help them get to college.

The College Sponsorship Program (CSP) helps LA County former foster youth who are attending four-year colleges obtain their bachelor’s degree.  This service-enriched program offers: financial assistance, academic monitoring and support, career planning, community events, post-graduate planning, summer internships, and enrichment opportunities.  CSP’s goal is to provide the support and encouragement necessary to help former foster youth reach greater levels of self-sufficiency through earning a four-year college degree.

Overview

Reporting to the Director of Education Programs, the Clinical Supervisor provides clinical supervision to the Education Department staff.

Work Location and Schedule

As an independent contractor, the Clinical Supervisor will be based out of the downtown UFC office on a part-time basis between the hours of 9:00am–5:00pm during the Monday-Friday workweek.  While work is primarily based in the UFC office, the Clinical Supervisor may work remotely on projects as needed.  Typical schedule will require between 10-20 hours per week. Clinical Supervisor should be available between the hours of 9:00am – 8:00pm should their support be required during a student crisis.

Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Supervision

·       Provide bi-weekly group supervision to three teams of College Counselors (with groups averaging between 3-8 people).

·       Provide individual clinical supervision as needed to the Education Department.

·       Provide expertise and support to staff when students are in crisis.

·       Inform staff of possible external resources to support students.

·       Assist with the training of the Education Department.

Other

·       Attend management meetings on a bi-monthly basis.

·       Additional duties as assigned.

Experience and Skills

Required/Preferred Experience

·       Must be a LCSW/LMFT or other related licensed professional with three or more years post-graduate experience in appropriate and relevant setting.

·       Knowledge of and experience with motivational interviewing in practice preferred.

·       Extensive knowledge of substance abuse and mental health issues preferred.

·       Experience working with transition-aged foster youth population preferred.
