Community Health Councils Summer Internship

Description:              health policy and advocacy organization that strives to increase access to health and quality health care for the uninsured, underserved and under-resourced.

 

Position Summary:      CHC seeks an intern to assist in project research, data collection and analysis, and policy development for the Access and Quality Healthcare projects at CHC.  The intern will assist the Policy Analyst for the Access and Quality Healthcare team to conduct research and analysis for a policy brief documenting lessons learned from the South LA Health Equity Scorecard.  Position starts immediately.  Compensation will be provided according to hours worked and qualifications.

Project Description:   Access and Quality Healthcare works to reduce disparities in healthcare, improve the quality of healthcare delivery, and preserve the healthcare safety net.  The Access & Quality of Healthcare coalitions mobilize community resources to increase access to quality care and improve health in the South Los Angeles community, build capacity for community organizing and health policy advocacy, and engage the public engagement in action around these areas. Access & Quality's active coalitions are the Coalition for Health & Justice and South Los Angeles Healthcare Roundtable. 

                                    The South LA Health Equity Scorecard, a project of the CHJ, is a report studying the intersection between the health of the community and the distribution, quality and capacity of basic resources in Los Angeles County.  The report assesses the inequities in the resource environment in South LA and examines the degree to which they mirror the disparities in health. 

 

Primary Responsibilities:

 

  • Data collection and research around health-related indicators for the South LA community
  • Research on healthcare environment resources (hospitals, doctors, clinics, public coverage programs, access to and utilization of medical care services) and physical environment resources (nutritional outlets, parks, physical activity options, housing, schools)
  • Drafting of analysis and follow-up to published policy recommendations in the Health Equity Scorecard
  • Participate in project team meetings and CHJ, Roundtable activities  
  • Track and compile project results/data including lessons learned and successes related to the Scorecard
  • Some local travel required; mileage reimbursement provided

 Desired qualifications:

 

·         Pursuing MPH, MSW, MPP or related master's degree

·         Ability to conduct literature reviews and knowledge of basic data collection methods; quantitative  analysis experience a plus

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Able to understand, communicate with, and effectively interact with people across cultures, gender and race
  • Can work independently to follow-through on assigned tasks in a timely manner and produce high quality work
  • Ability to commit at least 20 hours per week
